VAN NUYS, Calif. – Coming off a whirlwind tour of the January adult entertainment industry trade shows and the successful Pron Party held during CES, Pink Visual CEO Allison Vivas says her company’s plans for 2012 amount to “doing more of the same, only doing it better.”

“We’ve had a strong focus on the mobile market over the last several years and increasing our penetration of that market will continue to be among our top priorities,” Vivas said. “In terms of new wrinkles to our strategy, the primary one is going to be enhancing the interactivity of our products by incorporating more live entertainment, more video gaming and other, similar elements.”

Pink Visual’s next major launch will be an ad-supported free streaming site that is designed to offer adult studios a way to benefit directly from the free viewing of their content, Vivas said.

“In talking to the heads of other adult studios about the state of the market, one of the most frustrating things for them in recent years has been seeing their content generate literally millions of views on free sites that are displaying their content without their permission, and yet they get no direct revenue from all those views,” Vivas said. “On the site we’re developing, the advertising revenue generated by views of their content is shared directly with the studio. The more their content is viewed, the more the studio earns.”

PVLocker.com (www.pvlocker.com), the 2012 winner of the XBIZ Award for Innovative Web/Tech Product of the Year, is a major departure from Pink Visual’s subscription-based model. Offering content that is sold one scene at a time, PVLocker enables users to store their purchased content in Pink Visual’s server ‘cloud,’ where they can then watch the videos in cross-platform fashion on their PC, smartphone or tablet device.

Another aspect of Pink Visual’s strategy that will remain firmly in place is the studio’s anti-piracy efforts, Vivas said.

“We are going to continue to enforce our intellectual property rights vigorously, including through litigation when necessary,” Vivas said. “It’s not that we are eager to sue anybody, but we aren’t going to hesitate to do so when the situation calls for it.”

Vivas explained that litigation is just one aspect of Pink Visual’s anti-piracy approach, which she describes as a “comprehensive effort driven as much by technical innovation as by legal action.”

“We don’t separate our anti-piracy strategy from our overall business strategy,” Vivas said. “Building and launching sites like PVLocker.com and PinkVisualGames.com is a direct result of our focus on the root causes of widespread piracy, and reflect our belief that if you offer a higher quality experience to consumers, more of them will buy.”

Vivas also emphasized that offering a quality experience to consumers “involves much more than just entertaining them,” adding that the importance of treating customers right is something the adult entertainment industry needs to “fully absorb” in order to improve the state of the industry.

“As an industry, there’s still a lot of room for our public image to improve,” Vivas said. “Of course there’s an unfair stigma attached to what we do, but some of the negative perceptions people have about the adult industry are perceptions that the industry itself has created and encouraged in the past. As an industry we need to work towards to winning respect through ethical and fair practices. Holding each other accountable and respecting each other’s intellectual property rights is part of that, but the bigger part is how we interact with our customers. That’s where we need to earn respect first and foremost, and then a broader respect of society as a whole will follow.”

Los Angeles City Council has approved an ordinance mandating condom use on porn sets. The 9-1 vote was given final approval this morning and now awaits signature by the mayor before LAPD and city officials next figure out how exactly to enforce it.

Whether or not L.A. County would feel the financial effects of this potential action – or that a move of this magnitude would even happen – is unclear, but industry leaders are adamant that porn consumers simply don’t want to see condoms on the screen.

Requiring condoms has been a hot button topic for years, and with past reports of fear-inflated AIDS “outbreaks” groups of proponents – including the media-friendly AIDS Healthcare Foundation – have made it their initiative to put an ordinance like this into effect.

The L.A. City Council is expected to give final approval to a measure that will require condoms for porn performers who work at location shoots that are permitted by City Hall.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has been pushing for such a rule for a few years, note that the council needs only eight (8) ‘yes’ votes to be passed into law.

Keep in mind that at the “first reading” of the law, only one councilman, Mitch Englander, opposed it.

The AHF calls the city rule “historic.”

The group got approval from the City Clerk to put the issue before voters, and L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich took the matter to court in an effort to block the initiative from reaching the ballot.

He argued that the city could not do the state’s work for it in this matter — and that work is requiring condoms on-set.

Canadians are about to see a lot more of themselves on screen, albeit scantily clad and perhaps in some compromising positions.

Or so promises the first homegrown Canadian adult-oriented entertainment TV channel, which went on the air Thursday at 10 p.m.

The Montreal-based cable network, called Vanessa, went live first with its French channel, with an English counterpart to follow next year.

Its focus is not hardcore, but rather the softer and more erotic side of sex. The channel will only show triple-X films after 11 p.m.

“There is nothing like this in Canada,” says Vanessa’s content manager Pierre Thibeault. “It’s the first time Canadians will be able to see themselves as much as they will.”

This will be the case not only in the films they put on air, Thibeault says, but in programs that “talk about sex” — reality series, for instance, or sitcoms.

Anne-Marie Losique, known as Quebec’s “Queen of soft porn,” and also head of the production company Image Diffusion International, is the woman behind Vanessa. She promises that the new network will show at least 40 per cent homegrown content — double the amount than its carriage licence requires.

When asked whether Vanessa will be, as such, offering Canadians something they haven’t seen before, a representative from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission replied, “That’s fair to say.”

“We think the Canadian public wants to see nice girls and nice guys and intercourse, but also to be informed, to laugh,” Thibeault ventured.

Homegrown content will include a show on the life of female strippers, a lighthearted educational series on sex toys, Miss Nude Canada and Miss Quebec Nude. On the more risqué side, Vanessa’s lineup includes a show involving Quebec porn actor BrunoB in explicit situations in public areas.

Other adult-oriented channels available in Canada include Penthouse TV and Hustler TV, which focus mostly on the hardcore.

The channel is also procuring dubbed versions of American offerings, such as the Lingerie Football League and some Playboy Channel shows, including the Alberta-made Boy Next Door.

There will be some serious content as well; for example, a documentary on sex trafficking. “There will be documentaries on pleasure, and fantasies too,” Thibeault said.

Jason Danilak, president of Edmonton’s Real Productions, which makes Boy Nexxt Door, had planned a channel similar to Vanessa but has since decided not to go ahead with the venture. “I think there definitely could be a demand for it,” Danilak said. “It will come down to their programming, if they show what people want to watch.”

Danilak firmly believes Canadians have a healthy appetite for Canadian content. “There’s always an appeal to see something that’s local, that you could go down to the supermarket and see that actual girl.”
